Plaça Independència is a point of transition between old and new city. The square was designed by Martí Sureda i Deulovol in the 19th century following the most usual pattern of arcaded square and in keeping with the neoclassical style. It was built in several stages. The facades, consisting of three floors and an attic, are the highest of all places of this kind of Calalunya. Its arcades house bars and cafes with terraces which are very popular.

At the center of the compound can be seen the monument to the “Defenders of Girona” against the French siege, sculpted by Antoni Parera (19th century). In the square we can also find “The boy of the turtle” (1945) source and sculpted by Josep and Jordi Oliver.

At one end of the square is the building of Post and Telegraph (1916), designed by Eusebi Bona and Enric Catà following the same style. The sculptures on the facade are from Frederic Marés.
